Today as I sit here breathlessly watching reports of Cat 5 Maria pounding Dominica and Puerto Rico, like you I’m overwhelmed by the losses and suffering of so many victims of this vicious hurricane season. As we collectively hold our breath, bracing for what’s yet to come, I’m hoping and praying that those in her path over the next few days will be safe.
My heart is heavy as I my thoughts shift to the wildfires in the west… the floods in Asia… and the earthquakes in Mexico. Our world has changed.
For those of you who have been inquiring, my family evacuated to Georgia and South Carolina for Hurricane Irma. We were very fortunate. We came home to only minimal damage, mostly downed trees and power outages that were quickly restored.
But I find myself asking, “What can I do to help?” and every option I consider seems insignificant in the face of this widespread devastation. It truly is overwhelming… but at the same time, human kindness and generosity in these days knows no limits.
Countless stories abound of heroic first responders… neighbors helping neighbors… communities pulling together… and even a nun and a costumed Superman coming to the rescue as deft chainsaw-wielding heroes.
And this man, Sir Richard Branson…
“Look, you can never be 100% sure about links,” Branson said when he was asked earlier today if he saw a correlation between the recent hurricanes and climate change.
“But scientists have said the storms are going to get more and more and more intense and more and more often. We’ve had four storms within a month, all far greater than have ever, ever, ever happened in history.” Go here for the full story.
There’s no doubt, going forward we need to be better prepared. And I can tell you from first-hand experience, when you panic it’s so stressful. If you ever need to evacuate, be sure to stock your home with basic supplies before you leave. You’ll be grateful for the much needed peace of mind when you return.
Many people book trips and cruises, plan weddings and family reunions during the summer and fall months of Hurricane Season… for good reason, the weather is great and prices are nearly half what they would be in high season.
For the last decade this has been okay… but there’s no need to risk everything.
